I talked to some pharmacy interns and pharmacists that I work with about what they use to study drugs. I learned that flashcards aren’t the only things they use to study drugs. They often make or use premade charts as well This gave me the idea of adding the ability to create charts on my page. My idea is to have a database of all the drugs that you have to study in pharmacy school with all of the info that you might possibly need about each drug. You can go in and with a few clicks you can pick what info that you want included in the charts then print them out or save them in your account. I can build off of the models that I created for the flashcards.
Us pharmacy techs only have to learn the top 200 drugs but I remember one pharmacy student telling me that they had to learn around 8-900 every year. I soon discovered that it’s not so easy to find a definitive list of these drugs online. Just googling will just give you the top 100-200-or 300 drugs.
“So where am I going to get this list,” I thought. I looked on reddit to see what books that pharmacy students study for pharmacology which is the study of how chemicals affect living organisms. Several books were recommended including Katzung and Goodman and Gillman, both of which I googled and found pdfs of.
I started reading one of them and realized I was far outside of my depth. I reached out on reddit in the pharmacy school subreddit looking for a possible pharmacy student partner to help me with the project but there were no takers. So, next I decided to look up what are the prereqs to studying pharmacology. They included anatomy & physiology, general chemistry as well as organic chemistry. I plan to buy some cheap used textbooks and spend some hours trying to familiarize myself with the material.
I also spent some time researching whether there were other websites already doing what I’m trying to do. I discovered several interesting websites. There’s a website that sells premade charts for pharmacology, a site that makes games for learning drug names and also a website that teaches pharmacology through creative cartoon drawings. So there isn’t anything it seems exactly like what I’m trying to do and I wonder if it’s because it’s been tried before and was a failure or if no one has had this idea.
I’ve also been researching how to set up subscription accounts. There are a number of options available. The first and most difficult is creating your own system. I will not even attempt. The other option is to use a payment processing service such as Stripe, PayPal, or Square. But before I do that I need to set up an LLC which costs $300 in Texas.
